Authentication error when connecting from Windows XP

Note. Windows XP support ended in 2014 and the system no longer receives security updates. We strongly advise against using it to connect to servers. This article is kept for reference.

If your PC runs Windows XP, connecting to the server's remote desktop may produce the following message:

Error: the remote computer requires network level authentication

“The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support.”

To resolve it:

  1. Check that Service Pack 3 is installed.
  2. Check that you are running the latest RDP client available for Windows XP.
  3. Enable CredSSP support in the Windows XP registry, then restart the PC. If you need a ready-made REG file, contact support.
